Affordable housing scheme rejected by builders
An inexpensive housing scheme from Planning Minister Freddie Cohen has been rejected by builders.
Senator Cohen wants up to 20% of property on future building developments handed over to the States.
The Jersey Construction Council state the scheme is flawed and not properly examined.
The council is calling on States members to defer the proposals for further investigation.
At a recent gathdering of the Council it was stated that the policy of relying on private housebuilders to provide almost all of the affordble housing over the next decade will have far-reaching implications for landowners, developers, the construction industry and its associated trades and professions.
The Council concurs with the need to provide inexpensive housing because house prices are “well beyond the reach of many citizens, either to purchase or rent on the open market”.
The latest figures show that the average cost of a house in Jersey is 443,000 compared with 205,000 in the UK.
Only 48% of islanders are home owners compared with 72% in the UK.
