City Councilor Bruce Tobey’s idea of exploring a potential “partnership” with a non-profit or other entity for using parts of City Hall is well worth a look. Yet, at the same time, it raises the same dominoes issue that we have noted in the past.

Virtually all of Gloucester’s future building and land-use questions start with a decision regarding the Fuller School building and property. And until that becomes certain, it’s difficult to address any others.

More and more, there seems to be growing consideration for reusing Fuller as a school site, perhaps as the Gloucester School District, with its diminishing enrollment, looks to consolidate some of its facilities. That, of course, would open space in one or more existing schools for the city to finally move the offices for which it absurdly still pays rent on Pond Road. And that could open even more space at City Hall, for which the city might even be able to draw in some lease revenue.

But any such proposal can’t truly move forward without a choice regarding Fuller. And that remains the School Committee’s call.

If there are to be some Fuller-based school consolidation plans, it’s time to get those cards on the table.
