Three old houses were demolished to make way for the new development of eighty townhouses in Avis by Jimmey Development. There was also an old landfill with building rubble which the developer cleaned out to lay a proper foundation.
The rubble from the demolished houses and the old building rubble is loaded into a crusher and broken down so that it can be used for the foundation, instead of having to transport the foundation materials in from Brakwater.
The building industry is the largest consumer of natural materials like sand, stone and gravel. In urban areas these material are depleted and builders need to transport them from further and further away to the building sites this pushes up building costs.
Recycling the building rubble becomes economically viable and of course, from an environmental view, imperative, stated Bosman. Building rubble normally gets dumped at municipal landfills which are rapidly reaching capacity. This is a pilot project and in future Bosman hopes to be able to process the rubble at the landfill sites.
The building rubble will be brought to the landfill sites and we will process it and transport it to the building sites where it is needed, he said.
There are currently seven sites for building rubble around Windhoek and some are reaching capacity. Recycling new building rubble and the existing rubble can expand the live span of these land fill sides.
All the metal is extracted from the rubble by powerful magnets in the crusher itself.
We only want stone and building rubble not metal that is why it is taken out, he said.
After the rubble is crushed laboratory tests are done to ensure that the ratio between dust and rock is perfect.
We are not just using rubble as a foundation it is exactly engineered and precise to give the ideal foundation possible, stated Bosman.
