Hope for Newport girl suffering from cystic fibrosis

FAMILY and friends of a Newport youngster who suffers from cystic fibrosis are fund-raising to help her in future life.

One-year-old Amy Smith, of Duffryn, suffers from the condition which affects the internal organs including the lungs and digestive system, clogging them with thick mucus.

Amy currently has to undergo physiotherapy for 20 minutes twice a day which involves her parents Louise, 30 and Steve, 35 giving her a nebuliser to rid her lungs of mucus.

She also has to take enzymes, multivitamins and antibiotics.

When Amy is five, she will have to carry out the physiotherapy herself and will be able to use a Positive Expiratory Pressure mask to help clear her lungs.

Mrs Smith said: “There is new medical equipment being developed all the time which will just make Amy’s life easier when doing physiotherapy so we want to raise the funds to be able to get for her what is available.”

Mrs Smith has already raised £1,000 through events such as charity automobile washes but further fund-raising is now planned.

A work colleague of Mr Smith, John Hutton, of Pill, will run the Cardiff half marathon in October. Mrs Smith’s brother Adam Cusack and brother-in-law Ryan Bates will also compete splitting their funds between Amy’s appeal and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

A culinary quiz night will be held tonight at the White Hart Village Inn, Llangibby, starting at 7pm costing £20 for a team of four.

A charity night organised by Mrs Smith and her friend Andrea Woodward will take place at the Irish Club, Newport, on October 7 with musical entertainment from ‘Peel Your Own Spuds’.
