Jackson County hospital looks to future building needs
MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Significant building improvements may becoming to Jackson County Regional Health Center in a few years.
Hospital board members heard a report from an architect andengineering firm that it would take $6.2 million to bring theexisting facility up to code and be energy efficient.
“I’m concerned if we upgraded the facility for $6.2 million, that would not include any renovations,” Dwain Trenkamp, boardmember, said.
Board President Kevin Burns called the report “eye-opening.”
The report and hospital board members stated the facility wasbuilt for in-patient services, but the bulk of its services nolonger are for in-patient care.
The hospital is accredited as a 25-bed facility. Curt Coleman, hospital administrator, stated it had 49 inpatients last month andprovided 1,300 outpatient services. The hospital no longer deliversbabies and the former obstetrics department is being remodeled asan outpatient sleep center.
Board members approved seeking bids for a master plan that wouldlook at several options for the hospital, including to build a new, smaller facility or fix up the existing structure.
Major issues with the current building are the heating and airconditioning units, old windows and tuckpointing, plus several firecode issues. The hospital has one of the highest electricity costsin the area — $435,000 a year, which is about $3 to $4 per squarefoot. The engineer stated most hospitals operate at about $1.50 persquare foot.
The hospital has 131,000 square feet, much of it used forstorage or left empty. Coleman noted the new Jones County MedicalCenter was built at about half the square feet of the originalhospital.
