JOPLIN, Mo—
Though there is much progress on the ground, Joplin is still in recovery mode.
Nearly seven months after a tornado tore through the town, the city’s school board will meet tonight to discuss where we go from here.
The twister damaged or destroyed ten schools, including Joplin High School and Irving Elementary, among others.
Almost miraculously, school started on time this year on August 17, albeit at different locations.
9th and 10th grade students attend school at Memorial Education Center, 310 W 8th Street. Memorial Education Center was built in 1896 and has been used continuously since then as a school. In 2009, Memorial Education Center underwent a renovation to upgrade the existing building.11th and 12th grade students, meanwhile attend school at the Shopko Campus, 101 North Range line Rd. Building D. This 84,000-square-foot building is adjacent to Joplin’s mall.
School officials plan to speak about plans to rebuild– and maybe redistrict at tonight’s meeting.
It starts at 6:00 p.m. at the 9th and 10th grade campus at Memorial Education Center.
