NL Playing Crucial Role in Ocean Research

This province will play a very important role as the world’s cceans take on an increasing importance for future life on the planet.

Karl Kenny is president of Marport, a company turning heads worldwide in developing innovative and advanced software-defined sonar technologies. Marport was just named one of Canada’s fastest growing companies.

Kenny states many people do not recognize the world’s oceans are vital to the survival of life on earth. He pointed out they cover 70 percent of our planet, but less than five percent of this vast frontier has been explored. He states we know more about outer space than we do about the oceans.

Kenny states over 3,000 people have reached the summit of Mount Everest, over 450 people have been to outer space, and 12 American astronauts have walked on the surface of the moon, but only two people – Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh – have been to the bottom of the ocean, accomplishments which are now almost 50 years old.

Kenny states Marport continues to innovate and develop advanced software-defined technologies to help secure the supply of subsea resources, such as protein, hydrocarbons, minerals and knowledge. Marport is convinced that this planet’s future lies below the surface of our seas, and that is where Newfoundland and Labrador will play a crucial role.
