US housing market gains traction

WASHINGTON A rebound in groundbreaking for US homes in April suggested the housing market recovery was gaining some traction, even though permits for future building fell. The Commerce Department stated housing starts increased 2.6 per cent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 717,000 units. March’s starts were revised up to a 699,000-unit pace from a previously reported 654,000 unit rate.

Investors had quite a bit of economic data to sift through last week. Housing starts declined by almost 6 percent in March, but building permits – a gauge of future building activity – rose 4.5 percent. It was its highest level in 3 and a half years. Sales of previously owned homes fell 2.6 percent in March highlighting the fragile recovery.

Increase in building permits signals housing market improvement

Building permits rose to their highest level in more than three years in March, a signal the housing market will continue its gradual recovery this year.  Permits, which provide a gauge for future building, were up 4.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 747,000 in March, the ideal performance since September 2008, the Commerce Department stated Tuesday.

New home construction declined by one percent in February, but permits — a gauge of future building activity — jumped more than five percent, their highest level since October, 2008. Sales of previously owned homes fell by almost one percent in February, but the winter selling season was the ideal in 5 years.

On-campus housing demolition leaves students reconsidering living plans

A surprising email came to manyWalnut Lane and Grace Street residents on Thursday: Their futurehomes are being demolished.  Kevin Meaney, the associate directorof the Office of Residence Life, stated in the email that JMU hasdecided to rebuild these buildings for 2012-13.  “The Walnut Lane Flats and GraceStreet Apartments will be demolished in the next few months afterschool is out in order to make room for construction of newhousing,” Meaney said.

Borough council split over plans for future homes

A PARCEL of land is at the centre of a row over where future homes should be built in Basingstoke. Last week, the borough council’s economic and prosperity committee looked into why the 2,000-acre Manydown site to the west of the town had not been included in the borough’s plans for future housing.
