Sotomayor spoke to more than 800 people in conjunction with the release of her new book, “My Beloved World.” In 2009, Sotomayor became the first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court.

Two years ago, Cambridge City native Jo Anne Sweet Barr was diagnosed with a fast-growing breast cancer. Barr, who lives in Kansas City, Mo., had been particularly vigilant since 1985 when her mother, Mary Clare Dolly Sweet of Cambridge City, had a double mastectomy to overcome a rare mirror image breast cancer.
