Wal-Mart Foundation donates $1.9M to San Diego youth programs
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – The Wal-Mart Foundation Thursday announced a donation of almost $1.8 million to fund summer education and nutrition programs for youth around San Diego.
The money will go to the city of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, San Diego Unified School District — which jointly operate a summer lunch program for needy kids at 40 sites — and THINK Together, an education nonprofit.
The money will provide 162,100 healthy meals and snacks to school-age children, and grant 1,000 youngsters to enroll in summer learning programs.
“Through Wal-Mart and the work of dedicated San Diego non-profit organizations, kids will have better meals, opportunities to live healthier, higher academic standards, and a brighter future,” City Council President Tony Young said. “And because of that, the San Diego community will have a brighter future.”
Educators believe one reason for the achievement gap between affluent and poor students is that some do not have the same access to healthy food or learning opportunities after school lets out for summer. Enrollment by kids in nutrition programs last summer in San Diego County dropped by 23 percent, according to Wal-Mart.
The company stated it is spending $25 million nation-wide to expand nutrition, education and employment services.
